swallowed the anchor? i dare say that this is the most impossible thing a person can do, even if he is given ten lives. not to be taken literally, it is an old seafarers terminology stating that a seaman who does not having any intention of being a landlubber, is the one who "swallowed the anchor". on the contrary, landlubber is the term, to keep it simple, a person who is not earning his pay by going out to sea.

seafaring is not only a job, it is life put altogether. imagine yourself in a community, your office mate, your relatives, your playmates(sports that is!), all tend to be different people, from different background and different part of your life.

normally there are around 20 to 30 people onboard a merchant ship. put all of that together. they are our workmate,friends,playmates, even sometimes our relatives.

i mentioned about being a seafarer who swallowed the anchor. so far, i have been at sea from 1991. that will add up to 15 years, not forgetting my time in college for my 3rd/2nd mate’s and  mate/master course. that means i have partially swallowed the anchor, if not whole! let’s see if i keep on sailing!

whatever it is, we must do whatever we enjoy in our life. if not, we won’t do it out of sincerity. when anything is done out of sincerity, it will become a burden and will carry on for the rest of our life. just decide and  anything that comes with it is all at the will of GOD almighty. just enjoy whatever you do. it is your choice anyway!

after the voyage started, it will come to an end. the ship may experienced good weather, everything working well according to plans. all the crew onboard are happy and anticipating what is interesting in the next port of call.

finally, the end comes. ship arrived at the port of call. our lives are just like that too. whenever we carrying out anything anywhere, once the task have been completed, we have to move on.

whether everything ended with good or bad terms,or never ends at all,or hanging, it is up to the parties involved to make sure everything concerning them is finished. it is then,the case can be closed. so no grey area exists anymore. we have to decide whether it will be black or white. do make decision and  make sure it is the right one. it might change your life forever!

a ships voyage resumes with a new cargo or a new charterer. perhaps, this is one of the dreaded aspect of sea life: anticipating where will the ship go for the next voyage, what cargo to carry, what kind of weather to be expected, how frequent(if on liner run) the port rotation.

this is also the most dreaded part for the second mate(second officer) who is the principle navigation officer onboard a merchant ship. everything concerning the new voyage: charts,publications, special rules and regulation regarding local ports,etc. the list goes on and on.

whenever a new voyage resumes, as per the planning principles, appraisal ,planning ,execution and monitoring have to be carried out as per checklist. everything not to be missed out.

our life is like that. whenever we see the opportunity, we will go all out on the endeavour to complete the task or anything that needs to be done. as far as the planning have been done, we just need to monitor anything concerning the tasks.

what really happens when the task is as not as what we planned before? this is when we need the contingency plans, whatever we expect to do. we always hope for the best and expect the worst. in a ship’s voyage, if necessary ,we need to abandon the ship if there is grave and imminent danger. so does our life. sometimes,we have to let go the things that are dear to us, or a person, perhaps.

it is better to let go if the situation persists, whether we like it or not. that’s life. just we need to know that it may be a blessing in disguise. a person that is being tested by God almighty is the person that is remembered by the divine being. maybe, it is time to get closer to the Almighty. it is the ultimate food for the soul!

all of you may wonder, why a ship is always called she, or any other feminine names. traditionally, ships have been referred as a female because seafaring is an exclusively men’s occupation. Men tend to associate anything that needs to be taken care of as a female. nowadays there are female sailors, but that does not apply to our malaysian industry.we still have a long way to go then…………

in the golden age of tall sailing ships, they even carved a female figurehead just below the bowsprit! go figure.

A ship is called a ’she’ because……………………..

• there is always a great deal of bustle around her
• there is usually a gang of men about
• she has a waist and stays
• it takes a lot of paint to keep her good looking 
• it is not the initial expense that breaks you, its the upkeep
• she can be all decked out
• it takes an experienced man to handle her correctly
• without a man at the helm, she is absolutely uncontrollable
• She shows her topsides, hides her bottom
• And when coming into port, always heads for the buoys

during a recent trip to parents house,went through some old photos. time really runs very fast since i last saw those photos during my cadet days. it seems just like yesterday, but looking back through all of them , most of them are dated circa 1991 to 1993. that was 15 years back. it looks like that i have lost track of time, metaphorically. where are those people, what do they do now, did i wonder. some of them are still keeping in touch,lifelong friends.

adapting to different ships at the rate of 3 times a year is quite a tedious process. imagine yourself shifting from one office to another every 4 months. different people,different working environment,different bosses,different ship: different handling characteristics,cargo handling equipement,different everything……………talking about adapting! i maybe mumbling nonsense at a very early part of a day.

so far, i have gone through quite a lot. that what makes me as i am today. a harbour welcomes us as we arrives and saying goodbyes then, are very hard to swallow. after enduring  furious storms, countless typhoons and 40-foot waves, arrival into a harbour was,and still is, the best feeling a sailor could have. a ship is as good as it is out to the sea as that was what they are intended to be, a ship. people always said that our life is like a ship’s voyage, when there is a beginning, there will be an end…….
